Bladder Leaks and Incontinence Support
Bladder leaks and incontinence are incredibly common, especially for women. You might be leaking wee when you laugh, rushing to the toilet and not quite making it, or always checking where the nearest loo is, just in case. If any of this sounds familiar, you’re in the right place.
At Thrive Physiotherapy in Sheffield, we help women understand and overcome bladder issues with tailored, supportive care that puts you first.
Is leaking wee normal?
Leaking urine at any age is very common, BUT that doesn’t mean it’s normal or something you have to accept. Around one in three women will experience some form of bladder incontinence in their life, yet many are told it’s just part of getting older, a side effect of having babies, or something to expect during menopause.
This simply isn’t true!
Bladder leaks might be common, but they are NOT inevitable. And the sooner you seek support, the sooner things can improve.
Types of Incontinence
There are different reasons why you might be leaking, and understanding what’s behind your symptoms is key to choosing the right treatment and getting the right support for you.
Stress Incontinence
This type of leak tends to happen when there’s a sudden increase in pressure put on your bladder. It might be when you cough, sneeze, laugh, run, jump, or lift something heavy. For some women, it can happen during exercise, and for others it might be as simple as a strong sneeze or bending down quickly.
It’s called “stress” incontinence because of the physical stress or pressure placed on the bladder, not emotional stress. In those moments, your pelvic floor muscles are meant to tighten and hold everything in. But if they don’t react quickly enough, or if they’re not working in sync with the rest of your body, a little leak can happen.
This doesn’t mean your muscles are weak. Often, it’s more about timing, coordination, or how much tension is held in the area. That’s why doing more squeezes isn’t always the solution. With the right support, you can retrain your body to respond more effectively so you can move, laugh, and live without worrying about leaks.
Urge Incontinence (Urgency)
Urge incontinence happens when you suddenly feel a strong need to wee and might not make it to the toilet in time. It can feel as though your bladder has made the decision for you, without giving you a chance to react. Some women say it comes out of nowhere, like their bladder is calling the shots.
This usually happens because the bladder has become a bit too sensitive and is sending signals to empty even when it’s not full. Everyday things can act as triggers, like hearing running water, unlocking your front door, or stepping out into the cold. Your brain and bladder start to associate certain situations with needing the toilet, and over time, those signals can become more frequent or urgent than they need to be.
It can feel frustrating or even a bit confusing, especially when there doesn’t seem to be a clear reason for it. But there is a way forward. With the right support, it’s possible to retrain your bladder and calm those urgent signals so you feel more in control again.
Many women find they experience both stress and urge incontinence, and every woman’s situation is slightly different. That’s why your care should be tailored to you, not just your symptoms.
It’s not just about your pelvic floor
At Thrive, we don’t believe in quick fixes or generic advice. We take the time to listen to your story, understand how your symptoms affect your life, and create a care plan that’s completely tailored to you.
We look at how your whole body is working, not just your pelvic floor. Your posture, breathing, core, and nervous system all play a part in bladder function, and we consider them all.
We don’t routinely offer internal (vaginal) examinations at your first visit, because we take a whole-body approach to understanding what might be affecting your pelvic floor. If we feel an internal examination could be helpful later on, we’ll explain why, talk it through together, and the choice will always be yours.
Personalised care that works for you
Your treatment plan might include working on pelvic floor coordination, calming an overactive bladder, improving movement habits, or small daily changes that support bladder control. It’s never just about doing more squeezes. We guide you through it all at your pace, with clear explanations and guided support.
We help you feel confident again
You don’t have to put up with leaks or always rushing to the loo. With the right support, things can genuinely change. At Thrive, we empower women to rebuild confidence and feel fully back in control of their bodies. It’s time to live your life without planning it around the toilet.
